9th October 2008 - Shoreham College celebrates British Food Fortnight
Catering manager, Jenny Smith, and her team celebrated British Food Fortnight with a locally sourced menu including British beef and root vegetable casserole, Melton Mowbray pork pie and Sussex eggs.
A central tasting table gave everyone the opportunity to try a wider variety of seasonal British produce in addition to their meal. Regional sausages and, perhaps surprisingly, Stilton cheese, were a huge hit, with children as young as 6 enjoying the strong blue cheese - some even combined it with pear as their choice over a pudding!
The children, particularly the reception and junior pupils, enjoyed tasting and learning about the 6 types of apples on display, with Early Windsor being popular as at least three children knew this apple and had it growing at home! Many of the children had never shaken a Cox apple to hear its seeds rattle and so this was a firm favourite too! Conference pears, Victoria Plums and blackberries were also part of the seasonal fruits.
Children brought in their home made fruit and vegetable faces to assemble a Harvest basket display. Non perishable food items were donated to local homeless charity, The Emmaus Centre, and sufficient funds were raised to provide breakfast for the children at a school in Kenya for an entire year. What a perfect finish to their Harvest Festival!
