11th February 2009 - King Edward’s Celebrates Burns’ Night in Style
The following is an extract from a local newspaper publication:
There was a touch of the Highlands in Witley on Saturday, as King Edward's School celebrated traditional Burns Night with Haggis and a traditional ceilidh on. The school's Parents' Association ran the popular event for the second year running, and a large turnout of sixth formers enjoyed themselves alongside parents and staff.
The haggis was ceremoniously piped in by local piper, David Baillie, paraded and then set about by headmaster Kerr Fulton-Peebles. A spokesman for the school said: "Mr Fulton-Peebles regaled us in broad and traditional style, when he addressed the haggis with the words of the immortal bard".
The ceremony was followed by an excellent meal produced by the school's caterers, Holroyd Howe Independent.
"There was scarcely a seat occupied during the lively series of Scottish country dances accompanied by the excellent band 'Fiddle and Squeeze' and the evening ended with a rendition of Auld Lang Syne," she added.
A spokesman for the Parents' Association said: "Our aim is to organise events that will be enjoyed by everyone in the King Edward's School community, and I think that we achieved that here. We greatly appreciated the enthusiastic 'savaging' of the Haggis by the headmaster, and it was lovely to see so many sixth formers joining in the dancing to celebrate the Scottish poet's 250th anniversary."
