30th June 2009 - Nutritional Roadshows!

Nutrition remains at the forefront of school catering. Whilst mindful of the guidelines produced by the Food Standards Agency and the National Governors Association, we have developed our own guidance notes for our teams.

"In order to effectively relate to the children, it's important to deliver the healthy eating message in such a way as to encourage and promote better balance and understanding without making this a dreary subject", says Nick Howe.

To launch this in a practical and fun manner, HHI hosted two regional 'road shows', one at Alleyn's School in Dulwich and the other at Cumnor House School in West Sussex, using this opportunity to train in some new marketing initiatives and ideas of ways to develop the topic of nutrition further in our schools.

Our guest speaker was Tina Lond-Caulk, a Registered Nutrition Consultant and parent at Rokeby School. Tina teamed up with Dave Mullis and Mark Williams, training and development chefs, to deliver a high energy presentation on popular healthy ingredients and the best ways to feature these on our menus. Tina's core message was:

"Optimum nutrition, seeks to perfect the balance of the body on a chemical level. It is very simply giving yourself the best possible intake of nutrients to allow your body to be as healthy as possible and to work as well as it can."

Tina, who works at The Health Doctors' Clinic in Harley Street, an integrated medical practice, is also a freelance consultant helping catering companies, private schools and nurseries establish practical Healthy Eating Policies.

Feedback from our staff was extremely positive as we develop this topic further.
